APTIM partnered with the City of Los Angeles Sanitation & Environment (LASAN) to design and deliver the Reusable Foodware Microgrant Program, helping local food service businesses reduce waste and transition to sustainable practices.

On behalf of the City of Los Angeles’ LASAN, APTIM and its subconsultants designed and implemented a reusable foodware microgrant program. APTIM converted food service establishments located in the Clean Up Green Up communities of Boyle Heights, Pacoima, Wilmington, and South Los Angeles from single-use to reusable foodware and accessories for dine-in services, promoting waste reduction.

Project Takeaways
  • We developed a microsite integrated with the LASAN website to receive and manage microgrant applications. This integration resulted in 180 applications being received and processed throughout the program.
  • We created case studies to showcase the success of the Reusable Foodware Microgrant Program. One case study documented eliminating more than 7,500 pounds of waste annually through the transition to reusable foodware.

Project History

In support of LASAN’s initiative to reduce a single-use waste within the City of Los Angeles, APTIM and its subconsultants designed and implemented the Reusable Foodware Microgrant Program. This pilot program aimed to transition dine-in food service establishments from single-use to reusable foodware and foodware accessories. Targeting over 600 businesses, the program provided education and surveyed business decision-makers to raise awareness and offer tailored solutions for reducing single-use plastics and waste. With APTIM’s help, 120 businesses were successfully converted, eliminating thousands of pounds of waste. APTIM provided project management, subcontractor management, business technical assistance, education design and development, and microgrant management services.
