Environmental Retail Index
Environmental Retail Index (ERI) is an annual benchmarking survey offering customized & actionable insights to sustainability and compliance teams at large retailers looking to improve their environmental programs.

The Environmental Retail Index enables leaders at regional, national, and international retail companies to assess how they compare with their peers in implementing facility-level sustainability practices. In its first year, we received responses from environmental compliance and sustainability leaders at top global retailers, including Best Buy, Dollar Tree, Kohl’s, and Petco.
Our questionnaire gathers insight into retailer preparedness for emerging environmental regulations, as well as the strategies, tools, and technologies that drive sustainable progress at the facility level. We also gauge participants’ priorities across multiple areas of environmental stewardship.
- Energy and greenhouse gases
- Waste management & diversion
- Environmental resilience
- Supply chain sustainability
Each ERI participant receives a complimentary report (and optional consultation) that compares their performance and responses with their peers.
Insights From the 2025 Survey
Our team also uses ERI data to develop thought leadership that addresses key trends and common questions identified by participants.
Why Participate in ERI
We understand that environmental compliance and sustainability teams are managing increasing reporting demands. ERI is designed to deliver value—not add to your workload.
Participants receive:
- Customized reports: Our individual reports make it easier to build the business case for new investments and strategic priorities with company leadership, using direct and specific peer benchmarking.
- Actionable insights: Our survey focuses on implementation rather than outcomes. While other environmental indices primarily assess broad impacts, risks, and opportunities, our index focuses on the resources, practices, and strategies needed to achieve stronger results.
- Exclusive features: While all survey data featured in our thought leadership is aggregated and anonymized, participants are invited to submit case studies of initiatives that may be highlighted as best practices.
Beyond the Report
Participation, individual participant reports, and results consultations are available at no cost. APTIM’s Sustainability Solutions team also provides additional support to help participants set targets, implement programs, and manage data collection.
