As a long-term partner, APTIM has delivered environmental, health, and safety (EHS) consulting services to support a national retail client’s operational compliance, sustainability goals, and risk reduction efforts across its national retail and distribution network.

Project History

APTIM’s support has focused on maintaining the client’s facilities (retail stores and distribution centers) in compliance with Department of Transportation environmental, health, and safety regulations. APTIM has visited over 40 distribution centers to inventory assets and processes requiring permits, plans, or registrations. From those initial site visits, APTIM prepared and/or submitted the necessary documents bringing each of these facilities into compliance.

APTIM has continued supporting supply chain facilities with regulatory compliance audits, permit and plan renewals (air; hazardous materials; tanks/spill prevention, control, and countermeasure; and wastewater), and submission of annual reports, such as hazardous materials business plans and tier II reports.

When new supply chain facilities are constructed, APTIM also handles all environmental permitting. For safety compliance, APTIM developed job hazard analyses and personal protective equipment assessments for each job function in the distribution centers.

Conducting 20 to 30 hazardous waste audits annually, APTIM helps the retailer’s stores reduce hazardous waste sent to landfills. This includes reviewing practices and procedures, in-store inspections, and training. From the initial waste audits, this client has reduced hazardous items found in the waste by more than 300%. With 25 waste diversion audits performed, APTIM has assisted this client with obtaining Total Resource Use and Efficiency Zero waste certifications at their headquarters building and distribution centers.

APTIM also supports this confidential retail client with DOT compliance by helping to develop programs and procedures and obtaining special permits for the transportation of hazardous materials, such as lithium batteries. APTIM performs annual compliance audits of this client’s primary and downstream recycling vendors. Finally, APTIM provides a regulatory review service, delivering client-specific monthly reports on proposed and new regulations that directly impact the client.
