Evaluating Waste Streams Across Event Operations
Large-scale events at Woodland Park Zoo generate a mix of waste types, including recyclables, compostables, landfill materials, and reusable items. Managing these streams effectively requires a clear understanding of waste stream analysis across different event conditions.
APTIM conducted audits during three distinct events—Jungle Party, a private buy-out, and ZooTunes—to capture variations in waste generation, guest behavior, and operational setup.
This approach provided a comprehensive waste composition analysis, allowing the zoo to better understand how materials moved through its disposal system.

Prior to the study, the zoo lacked detailed insight into material composition and contamination trends within its waste streams. Several factors were influencing performance:

Audit findings confirmed that compostable materials placed in trash were a major contributor to contamination and lost diversion opportunities.
Conducting Waste Stream Analysis and Data Collection
Woodland Park Zoo engaged APTIM for its experience in waste audit services and environmental sustainability consulting. APTIM applied a consistent methodology across all events, working alongside zoo staff and volunteers to ensure accurate sorting, measurement, and documentation.
The audit process included:
- Sorting materials into standardized categories

- Performing post-event waste stream analysis to calculate composition & contamination rates
Across the evaluated events, more than 2,230 pounds of material were analyzed, providing a detailed view of waste generation and disposal patterns.
