Regulated Waste Training for a Fortune 100 Retailer
APTIM delivers regulated waste training that helps retail associates apply environmental compliance requirements to daily facility operations.
Project Overview
A Fortune 100 retailer engaged APTIM to develop and deliver regulated waste training for associates responsible for on-site waste management.
The program began as hazardous waste compliance training and expanded over a multi-year engagement to address broader operational needs. From 2024 to 2026, APTIM conducted training in high-priority states, including California, Florida, Washington, New Jersey, and Texas, before expanding to new locations.
Over three years, APTIM delivered approximately 50 in-person sessions and adapted the curriculum for new states, regions, and facility needs. In-person delivery allowed associates to ask questions in real time, participate in hands-on demonstrations, and discuss facility-specific compliance scenarios with APTIM subject matter experts. The training reinforced regulated waste management procedures, improved facility-level consistency, and helped associates apply client procedures during daily operations.
The Client’s Need
The retailer needed training that went beyond standard curriculum and general regulatory instruction. Associates needed to understand how regulated waste requirements applied to their facilities, workflows, and internal processes.
Because retail operations vary by state, facility type, and staffing level, the client also needed a consistent training framework capable of addressing site-specific questions. Employee turnover among district and facility teams made repeatable, practical instruction especially important.
APTIM’s Approach
APTIM developed training that combined regulatory instruction with the client’s procedures, internal tools, and facility examples. The program prepared associates responsible for regulated waste management, hazardous waste handling, accumulation area oversight, container labeling, recordkeeping, and related compliance tasks.
Each session combined classroom instruction, hands-on demonstrations, knowledge checks, Q&A, and a practical wrap-up to reinforce how associates process and manage regulated waste on site.
APTIM also coordinated regional training cohorts to support efficient delivery and encourage shared learning among facilities. This format allowed participants to ask questions, compare practices, and discuss operational challenges with APTIM subject matter experts.
Training Scope
APTIM tailored the curriculum to the client’s operations, geography, and compliance needs.
Training topics included:
- Hazardous waste identification
- Hazardous waste, non-hazardous waste, universal waste, DOT, and GHS labeling
- Regulated waste accumulation area management
- Client-specific waste management procedures
- Classroom instruction and hands-on demonstrations
- Knowledge checks, final quizzes, Q&A, and training wrap-ups
- Recordkeeping, reporting, and training requirements
- Internal compliance tools and resources
- Facility-level regulated waste processes
As the engagement expanded, APTIM incorporated related environmental compliance topics, including stormwater, spill prevention, storage tanks, and other facility requirements.
Operational Impact
Retail associates need more than general regulatory instruction. They need to understand how waste identification, labeling, accumulation area oversight, recordkeeping, and internal tools apply during daily facility operations. APTIM’s in-person format gave participants time to practice procedures, ask site-specific questions, and learn from peers across facilities.
Project Outcomes
APTIM’s regulated waste training helped communicate compliance expectations consistently across a geographically diverse retail footprint. The program gave operational associates clearer guidance on hazardous waste requirements and related environmental compliance procedures.
Key outcomes included:
- Approximately 50 in-person training sessions over three years
- Expanded coverage across high-priority states, regions, and facility types
- Curriculum aligned with client procedures and internal tools
- State- and region-specific training customization
- Live Q&A with APTIM subject matter experts
- Broader training content covering additional environmental compliance areas
- Stronger consistency and shared learning across facilities
