Our 2022 Report
The second annual Sustainable Sport Index (SSI) Benchmarking Report, released in September 2022, is an analysis of self-reported survey data from 25 prominent professional and collegiate sport teams and venues in North America. The survey collected metrics from 2021 on key performance areas including:
SSI does not issue certifications, awards, or rankings. Rather, the anonymized report is intended to provide a state of the industry and encourage all venues to participate, regardless of where they are in their sustainability plans.
Our Findings
- Procurement Policies: The number of venues with an environmental procurement policy increased compared to last year's benchmark.
- Compost Waste Streams: Participant responses indicate a disconnect between using compostable service ware in a venue and having a corresponding compost waste capture stream.
- Carbon Emissions Tracking: Compared to other key performance indicators, carbon footprint tracking is relatively uncommon for our participating sports venues.
- Sponsorship Opportunities: Many of our participants experienced an increase in sponsorship revenue resulting from a sustainability program.
