What is CRM?
Cultural Resource Management (CRM) involves the identification, assessment, preservation, and management of cultural or archaeological resources, which include historic sites, buildings, structures, landscapes, and artifacts. This is done through surveys and studies of potential sites, excavations, and the creation of management plans and guidelines for their protection.
CRM Plays an Important Role in APTIM’s Coastal and Environmental Work
The APTIM archaeology team members are cross-disciplinary and trained as historic specialists, environmental planners, erosion and sedimentation control specialists, paleoclimatologists, geoarchaeologists, climate specialists, and marine archaeologists. APTIM has the capabilities to conduct Phase I, II, and III terrestrial and maritime archeological and geomorphological investigations, as well as artifact analysis and curation.

Our Background in Preserving Cultural Resources
APTIM provides several qualified archaeologists that exceed the secretary of the interior’s professional qualifications standards (48 FR 44738-44739) and have experience in coordination and correspondence with many private and federal agencies. APTIM archaeologists have also published nearly 500 books, monographs, and articles, and have accumulated more than $25 million in grants.
Our archaeologists pride themselves on having been involved at the supervisory level on some of the most dynamic archaeological excavations in the U.S. Our team is strategically structured to handle the most challenging archaeology projects in the world. They work closely with the coastal resources planning team on efforts to preserve some of the nations most endangered archaeological sites from climatic and other threats.
Our World-renowned CRM Expert
James “Jim” Adovasio, PhD, DSc, is a senior scientist for APTIM’s CRM team. Jim achieved world acclaim in the 1970s for his excavation of Pennsylvania’s Meadowcroft Rockshelter. With evidence of human habitation dating to ca. 16,000 years ago, Meadowcroft is recognized as one of the earliest archaeological sites in North America and one of the most meticulous excavations ever conducted.
During his career, Jim has specialized in the analysis of perishable materials and the application of high-tech archaeological methods. Recently, he has studied submerged evidence of early Americans off the coast of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico. He was the principal investigator of the re-excavation at the Old Vero Man Site in Florida, a late Ice Age locality with insights into the first Floridians.
Jim received his undergraduate degree in anthropology from the University of Arizona and doctorate in anthropology from the University of Utah. He is formerly the director of archaeology at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute of Florida Atlantic University and currently the director of archaeology at Senator John Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh. He is the author of more than 500 books, book chapters, monographs, articles, and papers, with his most recent being “Strangers in a New Land.”
