APTIM’s Path to Safety Excellence Through Continuous Improvement
Laying the Foundation for Safety Excellence
We begin our 2025 National Safety Month blog series by highlighting continuous improvement, a core principle of APTIM’s health, safety and environmental and quality (HSEQ) program. This commitment reflects our drive for excellence in safety and operational performance in alignment with APTIM’s HSE policies.
APTIM’s dedication to continuous improvement is demonstrated through our ongoing effort to enhance systems and processes within the HSE management system. These improvements are designed to reduce the frequency and severity of workplace injuries and illnesses across our organization. Our sustained focus on safety has led to measurable, year-over-year improvements in incident rates, employee engagement, and client confidence.
Continuous safety improvement follows a structured, multi-step cycle.
- Analyze safety performance data.
- Identify emerging risks, opportunities, or trends.
- Implement targeted changes to mitigate hazards.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of those actions.
This cycle closely mirrors the resiliency approach APTIM applies to critical infrastructure solutions, reinforcing our culture of proactive risk management and operational excellence.
Driving Continuous Improvement Through Data
APTIM recognizes that continual improvement depends on consistent monitoring and measurement using both qualitative and quantitative indicators, including leading and lagging metrics. These tools enable us to set interim targets and track progress toward our ultimate goal: delivering incident-free work that benefits our team members, the company, our clients, the public, and the environment.
- Safety Observations: APTIM emphasizes the consistent use and analysis of safety observations, great catches, and near-miss events to identify and address potential issues before incidents occur. We also prioritize the timely and accurate reporting of any incidents to enable shared learning across the organization.
- Incident Rates: We engage in the ongoing monitoring of workplace incidents involving first aid, medical treatment, work restrictions, or lost time to identify trends and proactively address risks related to severity and recurrence.
- Compliance Metrics: APTIM develops and monitors leading indicators of performance related to compliance with applicable laws, the HSE management system, and operational requirements. Supporting procedures and work instructions are in place to ensure that data related to HSE objectives and targets are regularly recorded, tracked, and evaluated.
Implementing Safety Improvements
Our people are essential to advancing APTIM’s continuous safety improvement process. This begins with strong support from leadership, alignment across business units, and active engagement from employees and team members.
- Communication of best practices, lessons learned, and relevant industry updates is facilitated through tools as biweekly Safety Tailgates, HSEQ advisories distributed to project safety representatives for team discussions, safety committees, and periodic stand-downs.
- A comprehensive HSE training program ensures that as policies, standards, and regulations evolve, the most current guidance is delivered to personnel in the field.
- By fostering a culture of curiosity, encouraging a questioning attitude, and empowering of all team members with stop-work authority, APTIM taps into the collective expertise of its workforce to address real-world safety challenges through innovative and forward-thinking solutions.
Continuous Evaluation for Safer Outcomes
As an industry-leading organization, APTIM continuously evaluates progress toward safety excellence across projects and programs.
- Routine HSE assessments are conducted to identify risks, uncover opportunities for improvement, and recognize exemplary safety leadership that can be leveraged across the organization.
- Safety perception is incorporated into periodic employee satisfaction surveys to evaluate trends and better understand how safety initiatives are experienced in the field.
- All safety incident and near-miss investigations involve both HSE and operational leadership to ensure implementation of effective corrective actions. These actions are then shared across teams as learning opportunities.
Translating Improvement into Impact
APTIM’s commitment to continuous health and safety is a fundamental part of the value we deliver as a trusted provider of environmental, sustainability, resilience, and infrastructure solutions. Across government, commercial, industrial, and energy projects, our focus on safety excellence supports technology-driven engineering solutions, a strong and resilient workforce, and robust operational planning and execution, for our teammates, clients, and the communities we serve.
