Enhance Community Resilience With AI

Traditional long-term risk reduction strategies fall short. Learn how to enhance community resilience with AI.

Since the passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and active programs by several federal agencies, unprecedented funding has catalyzed a surge in risk mitigation under changing physical, social, and cyber conditions. Digital innovations, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), are key tools to predict community outcomes in a dynamic technical, political, and environmental landscape.

With over three decades of experience, APTIM is poised to collaborate with you to assess, address, and adapt to environmental and climate-related threats, leveraging cutting-edge technologies and innovative methodologies.

A New Algorithm for Risk Mitigation

In the US, resilience efforts shifted from concentrations on erosive soil in the southern plains; wildfires in the west; and flood control along the Mississippi River, Tennessee River, and Everglades to preventing infrastructure failures nationwide. As urban areas became more densely populated, improving building codes, design standards, and material quality and supply chain resilience emerged as necessary measures for community protection. Even more recently, cultural and social movements have highlighted disparities in disaster impacts and community distress, resulting in a renewed emphasis on inclusive risk mitigation.

Long-term risk reduction strategies that account for all these complexities and prioritize risks based on the likelihood and severity of potential impacts are needed. However, traditional methods fall short.

Evolving Solutions Using AI & ML

Resilience entails a continual process of learning, adaptation, and innovation in response to evolving risks and challenges. For instance, integrating transportation, communication, utility, and flood control infrastructure with the internet is an important advancement for resilience, but it also raises a concern for cybersecurity.

To mitigate cybersecurity threats, risk mitigation for flood control systems with remote monitoring or controls should consider: network segmentation, encryption, access controls, intrusion detection systems, regular security updates, an auditing program, and employee training for response. Each of these measures expand the typical scope of work for design engineers and project planners and open the floodgates to further potential risks.

Acknowledging the far-reaching and systemic nature of these efforts, AI presents an opportunity to increase efficiencies and effectiveness by:

  • Proactively mitigating risk by analyzing vulnerabilities and performance trends
  • Analyzing large volumes of data from various sources—including sensor networks, satellite imagery, and historical records—to assess infrastructure vulnerabilities such as floods or structural failures
  • Supporting emergency response efforts by analyzing real-time data streams, coordinating resource allocation, optimizing evacuation routes, and conducting rapid damage assessments

ML algorithms can also be used to identify patterns, correlations, and risk factors to inform proactive strategies. The use cases for both these technologies are rapidly evolving and expanding as leading organizations begin to uncover their potential.
