Climate Risk & Disclosure Strategy for Global Cruise Operations
APTIM supported a global cruise operator in strengthening climate risk assessment and aligning sustainability disclosures with evolving global reporting standards.
Building on Existing Climate Risk Efforts
APTIM brings a structured, analytical approach to climate risk and sustainability consulting, helping organizations turn climate risk data into report-ready findings and planning outputs. For this project, APTIM assessed climate-related risks and opportunities across global operations to improve transparency and consistency in climate-related reporting.
The work focused on enhancing existing analyses while aligning climate disclosures with emerging international standards and best practices.
Assessing Risk Across Global Operations
The client operates multiple cruise brands with itineraries spanning hundreds of destinations worldwide. Its operations—including vessels, port infrastructure, and privately leased island assets—are exposed to a range of climate-related risks.
- Physical risks such as sea-level rise & increased storm intensity
- Transition risks associated with regulatory changes & carbon pricing
- Financial & operational impacts tied to climate variability
Understanding how these risks affect assets and enterprise-level performance was critical to improving long-term planning and climate disclosure.
Responding to Changing Climate Reporting Requirements
As global sustainability frameworks expand, the client identified the need to strengthen its approach to climate-related reporting. The shift from Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) to standards developed by the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) introduced expanded expectations for transparency and financial disclosure.
To address these changes, the client sought to:
- Update & refine climate scenario analysis
- Improve alignment with IFRS sustainability reporting standards
- Reassess material climate risks & opportunities
- Evaluate resilience across operational assets
These priorities guided the scope and direction of the engagement.
Implementing Scenario Analysis & Risk Evaluation
APTIM delivered a phased approach to support climate risk evaluation and reporting improvements.
Climate Risk & Opportunity Assessment
APTIM conducted a benchmarking review of physical and transition risks, incorporating prior analyses, peer disclosures, and internal assessments. Scenario modeling included:
- Carbon pricing projections using Network for Greening the Financial System data
- Physical risk projections, including sea-level rise & storm surge, using National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration data
Sustainability Reporting Alignment
APTIM developed an IFRS-aligned report that integrated findings from risk assessments, scenario analysis, and existing disclosures. The report supported ongoing alignment with ISSB standards and future regulatory requirements.
Internal Engagement & Communication
To support internal awareness, APTIM developed communication materials tailored to both technical teams and broader audiences, including presentations and summary resources to facilitate discussion and strategy alignment.
Providing Tools to Support Ongoing Risk Management & Reporting
APTIM delivered a set of project outputs to support ongoing climate risk management and disclosure, including:
- Updated climate scenario analysis aligned with current best practices
- A climate risk & opportunity register structured around TCFD categories
- Asset-level resilience assessments for ports & private island locations
- An IFRS-aligned sustainability report to support financial disclosures
- Internal communication materials to support stakeholder understanding
Improving Climate Risk Visibility & Disclosure Readiness
Through this engagement, APTIM supported the client in strengthening both its understanding of climate risks and its ability to communicate those risks effectively.
- Improved alignment with global reporting frameworks
- Greater visibility into physical & transition risks
- Enhanced integration of climate considerations into business strategy
- Increased internal awareness of climate-related impacts & opportunities
These improvements position the organization to respond more effectively to regulatory changes and support long-term resilience and decarbonization efforts.
