JED Solid Waste Management Renewable Landfill Gas to Energy Facility
The JED Solid Waste Management Renewable Landfill Gas to Energy Facility was designed, constructed and will be operated by APTIM under a long-term landfill gas rights agreement with Progressive Waste Solutions. The facility incorporates the application of new and existing techniques to utilize biogas as a renewable fuel source for power generation. Because the facility is located in a hurricane-prone region, the 66-foot high exhaust stacks incorporate spiral strakes to resist hurricane wind loading that may reach as high as 145 mph. Thermal expansion joints were incorporated into the silencer and exhaust support structure to accommodate temperatures up to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit. As part of the landfill gas purchase agreement, PWS provides landfill gas to the facility that is treated with a sulfa-treat hydrogen sulfide removal process to meet Florida's strict requirements for reducing sulfur emissions. The facility utilizes up to 6,000 standard cubic feet per minute of landfill gas. The facility is currently accepting more than 5,000 tons of waste per day and is projected to continue operations for the next 35 years.
