Ultra Low-Emission Landfill Gas Flare
APTIM’s subsidiary, LFG Specialties, designed and implemented an ultra-low emission (ULE) landfill gas flare for a national waste management company to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The safer, more compact ULE landfill gas flare has the following emission factors.
- Nitrogen Oxide (NOx): 025 lbs/MMBTU
- Carbon Monoxide (CO): 060 lbs/MMBTU
- Total Hydrocarbons: 5% destruction efficiency
Project History
APTIM’s solid waste team provided a national waste management company with an ULE landfill gas enclosed flare system. The ULE flare reduces NOx by 60%, CO by 33%, and total hydrocarbons by 0.5% compared to a standard natural draft enclosed flare. High-efficiency burners utilize a proprietary design promoting micro-turbulence in the efficient combustion of a premixed air-to-fuel ratio. The system is also designed to accommodate the transport of landfill gas to an existing beneficial use project that generates renewable natural gas.
The ULE flare technology was chosen for this project based on the emission criteria of the location’s regulatory requirements. The site is located in a non-attainment area and has stringent limits on emission constituents. The ULE flare is considered the best available control technology for these emissions and was required to obtain a Title V air permit.
