Why Data Quality Matters for Compliance & Business Decisions: Lessons From a STRIVE Business Analyst Intern

Organizations rely on data to monitor financial performance, manage projects, and conduct analyses across systems and business functions. However, collecting large volumes of data does not automatically create value. The usefulness of data depends on its quality and how effectively it is managed.

Throughout my internship with APTIM’s STRIVE program, I learned that high-quality data influences business decisions, strengthens collaboration, and provides the foundation for analytics and emerging technologies. High-quality data forms the foundation for effective business analysis, reporting, and decision-making. To provide meaningful insights, data should be accurate, complete, consistent, and well managed. Maintaining those attributes enables organizations to produce credible analysis, improve reporting consistency, and make decisions with confidence.

Structured data is organized within predefined formats, such as spreadsheets and databases. Unstructured data includes information stored in formats such as PDF files, photographs, emails, and Word documents.

Organizations that effectively manage both structured and unstructured data are better equipped to identify trends, improve performance, and support informed decision-making across the business.

How Data Quality Supports Better Decisions & Business Performance

Business analytics, reporting, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning depend on reliable underlying data. As a business analyst intern, one of the first lessons I learned was that the quality of the analytical insights depends on the quality of the underlying data. Incomplete, inconsistent, or inaccurate information can produce misleading analyses and poor business decisions.

High-quality data enables organizations to make informed decisions based on facts rather than assumptions. Reliable information helps organizations measure performance, identify opportunities for improvement, and evaluate business and compliance outcomes.

These principles align with methodologies such as Six Sigma, which emphasize using accurate data to reduce variation, improve processes, and support continuous improvement.

Beyond supporting better decision-making, well-managed data enables organizations to expand their analytical capabilities. Reliable datasets support dashboard development, automated reporting, predictive analytics, and AI applications without requiring teams to spend significant time correcting underlying data issues.

One of the most valuable lessons I have learned during my internship is the importance of data stewardship. Good data depends on individuals throughout an organization taking responsibility for maintaining accurate information.

Whether developing reports, entering data, validating information, or supporting system integrations, attention to detail matters because business decisions depend on the quality of the underlying data.

How Data Governance Reduces Regulatory Risk

As organizations generate and manage information across multiple systems, applications, and business processes, data governance helps establish consistent standards for how data is collected, maintained, accessed, and used. Lessons From a STRIVE Business Analyst Internship

Throughout my internship in APTIM’s STRIVE program, I gained experience with data management, business analysis, and digital solutions while working alongside professionals from multiple disciplines. The opportunity to contribute to real projects provided valuable insight into how organizations manage complex information and use data to support business decisions.

One project allowed me to collect and analyze data for executive reports, reinforcing the importance of presenting information in ways that support clear communication and informed decision-making.

The most valuable lesson from my internship was that high-quality data is a business enabler, not simply a technical requirement. Accurate and consistent information supports stronger analytics, more effective collaboration, and better business decisions.

I also learned that professional growth often comes from stepping outside of familiar responsibilities. Participating in meetings, collaborating with colleagues across the organization, and asking questions provided opportunities to better understand both APTIM’s business and the role data plays in supporting clients.

For future interns, my advice is to take advantage of every opportunity to learn. Each project, conversation, and new experience provides a valuable perspective that extends well beyond day-to-day responsibilities.
