APTIM’s Patented Evaporator System: A Sustainable Solution for PFAS and Leachate

As environmental engineers and waste management professionals wrestle with the impact of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and leachate on our ecosystems, sustainable solutions should be top-of-mind. APTIM’s environmental solutions, including our patented leachate evaporator system, present a paradigm shift towards handling these chemical and waste management challenges.

The Dilemma of PFAS and Leachate in Our Environment

PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals used in a variety of industries worldwide to make fluoropolymer coatings and products that resist heat, oil, stains, grease, and water. Fluoropolymer coatings can be in a variety of products, including clothing, furniture, adhesives, food packaging, heat-resistant non-stick cooking surfaces, and the insulation of electrical wire.

At the end of their useful life, these products are typically disposed of in solid waste facilities and can end up in leachate, or landfill-produced liquid. Their potential for harm is underscored by their persistence in the environment and human body, meaning they do not break down and can accumulate over time.

The environmental threat posed by PFAS and leachate is multifaceted and complex. Groundwater contamination, air quality degradation, and the bioaccumulation of PFAS in wildlife and humans are significant concerns. Conventional leachate management systems, including biological treatment methods and off-site disposal, often fall short in completely addressing the contamination risks associated with PFAS.

E-Vap, designed and manufactured by APTIM's subsidiary, LFG Specialties LLC, redefines leachate treatment and is a sustainable solution for PFAS. The technology is a direct discharge leachate evaporator that is not only environmentally sound but also efficient. Utilizing landfill gas or natural gas as the fuel source, the system minimizes the potential for risks associated with leachate by vaporizing the liquid fraction within a vessel, discharging water vapor into the atmosphere, and returning the high-solids residual (containing the PFAS compounds) to the landfill waste mass.APTIM’s Evaporation Innovation

Recognizing the magnitude of the challenges posed by PFAS and leachate, APTIM has been steadfast in its research and development efforts to create sustainable solutions. At the crux of our approach is the patented E-Vap Leachate Evaporator System, a revolutionary technology that presents an effective and eco-friendly process for leachate treatment.

Real-World Application

A prime example of the E-Vap system’s prowess is showcased by APTIM’s evaporator facility in South Carolina. The facility operates 24/7 and can evaporate up to 40,000 gallons of leachate per day with natural gas as its fuel source. Stack testing performed by an independent company documented that the discharged vapor complies with stringent ambient air quality standards, including the minimal release of PFAS and particulate matter. This venture stands as a beacon of sustainability, boasting a fully integrated system that not only meets environmental compliance but also has the flexibility to operate on either landfill gas or natural gas. APTIM’s commitment is complete with an ownership position: we own and operate the system until 2030, demonstrating our long-term dedication to the cause.

Delve Deeper with APTIM

The confluence of PFAS and leachate is a pressing issue but one that can be addressed with innovative, sustainable technologies. E-Vap is not just a solution—it is a testament to the fact that environmental stewardship and efficient waste management can go hand in hand. Embracing such pioneering systems heralds a new dawn for the environmental sector, where challenges translate to catalysts for positive change. I will be at the Global Waste Management Symposium on February 25—28, so stop by Booth 6 to delve deeper into the possibilities offered by our resilient E-Vap system.
