Richard P. Kane Wetland Mitigation Bank
Prior to 2010, this 237 acre portion of the Richard P. Kane Natural Area (formerly known as the Empire Tract) was dominated by common reed and was not tidally influenced due to dikes along the eastern portion of the site. In 2010, construction of the 19.85 acre freshwater mitigation site and the 217.5 acre tidal wetland mitigation bank began. The freshwater mitigation site was constructed as compensation for freshwater wetlands lost during the installation of runway safety improvements and the realignment of Redneck Avenue at Teterboro airport. The tidal wetland mitigation bank was constructed to provide wetland mitigation for tidal wetlands lost due to approved transportation projects within the Hackensack Meadowlands District.
