Remedial Action for NAVFAC Naval Arctic Research Laboratory
Contract Scope
APTIM removed contaminants of concern (COC) within three buildings prior to demolition, excavated debris and contaminated soils, and performed soil cap maintenance at the former Naval Arctic Research Laboratory (NARL). Sites included the former Antenna Field, former Waste Disposal Area, and the Airstrip. The COC included lead, PCBs, asbestos, and petroleum hydrocarbons. We overcame multiple challenges and difficult site conditions to successfully obtain closure on 15 of the 16 scoped excavations. NARL is located in Barrow, Alaska, the northernmost settlement in the U.S., approximately 350 miles north of the Arctic Circle. It is known for its remote location and harsh conditions.
