Bureau of Ocean Energy Management: National Offshore Sand Inventory

APTIM has designed, permitted, implemented, and monitored more coastal restoration projects than any other firm in the US.

Demonstrating the value of this state-of-the-art project, this work has led to:

  • A first-of-its-kind award, valued at up to $25M over five years
  • Seven task orders issued to date, including three field investigations, two novel feasibility studies (i.e., high-resolution geophysical surveys using autonomous underwater vehicles, autonomous surface vehicles, and the Critical Minerals Desktop Manual), and a programmatic assessment

Project History

APTIM combines state-of-the-art geomorphologic mapping with geophysical and geotechnical measurements to locate and define large sand deposits for use in shore protection projects accurately and effectively. Based on this experience, APTIM was awarded the first ever indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract issued by the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Marine Minerals Program for Geophysical, Geological, and Environmental Data Collection and Analysis supporting Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) marine minerals stewardship.

The first-of-its-kind award covers potential work across the US OCS, including the Atlantic, Pacific, Alaska, and Gulf of Mexico coasts, as well as the OCS of US Pacific and Caribbean Island territories. APTIM’s scope of work includes identification, characterization, and delineation of sand to further the Marine Minerals Program’s development of a National Offshore Sand Inventory, as well as other critical/hard marine minerals in support of a future National Offshore Critical Mineral Inventory. APTIM has identified billions of cubic yards of offshore sediments and permitted hundreds of millions of cubic yards of beach quality sand that has been either placed on beaches or reserved for use in future projects.
