Top Sustainability Trends Shaping Sports Venue Operations

Sports and entertainment venues face growing pressure to improve sustainability performance while managing cost, guest experience, and operational risk. Discussions at the Green Sports Alliance Summit reinforced how leading organizations are moving from sustainability intent to practical execution across waste, water, climate resilience, fan engagement, and smart venue operations.

Sustainability in sports and entertainment is no longer defined by intent alone. Organizations across the industry are focusing more directly on execution, operational value, and measurable business outcomes.

At this year’s Green Sports Alliance Summit, one message consistently emerged across discussions: sustainability programs are becoming more closely tied to core venue operations and business strategy. Rather than treating sustainability as a standalone initiative, organizations are evaluating how environmental programs support operational efficiency, cost management, fan engagement, and resilience.

At the same time, progress is not occurring uniformly across all areas. Operational improvements tied directly to efficiency and cost savings continue to gain momentum, while more complex challenges, including climate resilience and water management, remain more difficult to address. This is particularly true in regions without strong regulatory drivers or infrastructure pressures. These trends are consistent with findings from APTIM’s Sustainable Sport Index (SSI), where improved facilities management was identified as the top benefit of sustainability programs for participating organizations.

The result is a more operationally focused approach to sustainability, where organizations are prioritizing initiatives that align environmental performance with enterprise value.

Operational Sustainability Strategies Are Improving Venue Performance

Sustainability initiatives continue to gain traction where business value is clear and measurable. At sports and entertainment venues, this is especially evident across waste reduction, food recovery, reuse systems, and resource management programs.

These areas directly intersect with cost control, efficiency, day-to-day venue performance, and guest experience. Discussions throughout the Summit highlighted growing interest in improving waste diversion rates, managing surplus food, and implementing more circular operational practices within high-volume event environments. According to SSI, the average industry diversion rate is 44%; however, industry leaders are achieving diversion rates exceeding 90% and earning TRUE Zero Waste certification.

Many organizations are now establishing zero-waste goals for venue operations, representing an 8% increase over the past year, according to SSI. Teams are evaluating opportunities to reduce disposal costs and recover additional value from material streams, with surplus food management serving as a focus area because it represents both an operational cost center and an opportunity for reuse and recovery programs.

Proven technologies, vendors, service providers, and operational strategies already exist at scale. The larger challenge is integrating these programs into operations in ways that are practical, efficient, and sustainable long-term.

Programs are most successful when they integrate naturally into existing workflows without disrupting venue performance or guest experience.

Fan Engagement Is Strengthening the Business Case for Sustainability

If operational sustainability initiatives are improving efficiency and reducing costs, fan engagement is becoming a critical driver of long-term business growth. According to SSI, 77% of participants reported increased visitor satisfaction tied to sustainability programs; however, a continuing challenge for organizations is creating sustainability experiences that resonate with all fans, not only those already focused on sustainability.

Discussions at the Summit highlighted how leagues, venues, and entertainment organizations are changing how they connect sustainability initiatives to guest experience. For many younger attendees, sustainability influences how they evaluate brands, organizations, and live event experiences.

As a result, leagues and venues are positioning sustainability not only as an operational initiative, but also as a component of audience engagement and commercial strategy. This shift places greater emphasis on making sustainability programs visible, interactive, and easy for fans to participate in during events.

Examples discussed throughout the Summit included gamified recycling programs, visible waste diversion systems, sustainable storytelling, and interactive fan engagement opportunities tied to revenue operations.

In this environment, sustainability serves a dual purpose. It strengthens alignment with fan expectations while also creating new opportunities for sponsors and partners to participate in sustainability-focused activations and messaging.

Climate Resilience & Water Management Are Rising Venue Risk Priorities

While operational sustainability programs continue to advance, discussions throughout the Summit reinforced that climate resilience and water management are becoming larger operational and financial concerns for sports and entertainment organizations.

Extreme heat, severe weather events, flooding, drought conditions, and changing environmental conditions are already affecting scheduling, athlete performance, venue operations, infrastructure planning, and revenue continuity. According to SSI, 75% of venues are evaluating vulnerabilities associated with climate change; however, only 8% have developed formal climate adaptation plans. Increasingly, climate-related disruptions are being evaluated through a business risk lens rather than solely as environmental concerns.

Water management is emerging as a similarly significant challenge. Many of the most impactful opportunities for water reduction require specialized infrastructure, operational changes, and planning. Solutions are highly dependent on regional conditions, facility design, and local water availability, making implementation more complex than many traditional efficiency initiatives.

The challenge for many organizations is translating climate data, scientific research, and scenario-based analysis into tangible financial and operational decision-making.

These issues are often more difficult to prioritize because the risks may not immediately be visible within daily operations, despite their significance.

Smart Venue Technology Is Turning Sustainability Data into Operational Decisions

Technology continues to play a larger role in sustainability program management across sports and entertainment venues. However, the role of technology is shifting from basic data collection toward more actionable operational intelligence.

Across venues, organizations are implementing technologies that support more predictive, data informed decision-making related to water use, energy consumption, waste generation, and facility operations.

One example discussed during the Summit involved the use of real-time monitoring systems that track operational inputs such as water and energy use. These systems allow operators to identify anomalies, detect inefficiencies, and respond more quickly to issues. Rather than relying solely on post-event reporting or monthly utility reviews, venue teams can evaluate performance in real time and make immediate adjustments.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is also beginning to play a larger role in sustainability operations. Organizations are evaluating how AI can synthesize large volumes of data, identify patterns, and surface insights that support faster and more informed decision-making.

The shift is helping organizations move toward smarter venue operations that prioritize proactive management, operational efficiency, and long-term sustainability performance.

Benchmarking Sports Sustainability Performance Across Venues

As sustainability programs become more integrated into operations and business strategy, benchmarking is becoming more important for leagues and venues seeking to evaluate performance and prioritize investments.

APTIM supports industry benchmarking efforts through SSI, which helps organizations compare sustainability performance relative to industry peers and identify opportunities for improvement.

Using aggregated industry data, SSI provides participating organizations with insights into operational trends, sustainability priorities, and implementation gaps remaining across key focus areas. Individualized reporting also helps organizations evaluate where resources and operational strategies may have the greatest impact.

Benchmarking provides organizations with a clearer understanding of where progress is occurring and where additional focus may be needed.
