Decommissioning & Disposal, Sturgis MH-1A Barge, US Army Corps Of Engineers

YEAR:

2019

LOCATION:

US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS

APTIM decommissioned, dismantled, and disposed of the MH-1A Sturgis Barge—the first floating nuclear power station. Major work scope included characterization of radiologically contaminated materials and equipment, nuclear reactor decommissioning, and waste management. As a first-of-its-kind project with no precedent for successful execution, Sturgis required establishing and maintaining an effective partnership with USACE to face and overcome challenges. As stated by USACE in their final CPAR evaluation, “Overall, the completion of this project was a great success ...” APTIM received the USACE 2018 Environmental Team of the Year Award.
